Diwali is known as the "festival of lights," and celebrated around the world. The special time of year is marked with homes and businesses being cleaned and decorated by day and illuminated by night with special lights and candles. It is also a time for visiting family and friends, exchanging gifts, having large feasts, saying prayers, expressing gratitude and forgiveness, contributing to charitable causes and helping those less fortunate.
While Diwali is rooted in Hindu, Sikh, Jain and Buddhists legends and religious traditions, the festival is significant across many faiths and has become a secular holiday. Sikhs also commemorate the occasion as “Bandi Chhor Divas” (The Day of Liberation) to mark the day that Guru Hargobind, the sixth guru, was freed from wrongful imprisonment, while he also negotiated the release of 52 Hindu kings. The symbolic significance of the festival is the victory of good over evil, light over darkness.
We wish everyone a happy, festive Diwali … may the light within all of us shine bright.
